Balancing Life and (School) Life

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

If you ask a college student how they felt about starting college, I guarantee that almost everyone would say, “I’m just getting used to adult-ing.” In a world where books and #2 pencils become your best friends, it’s hard to find time for anything else. Even so, it is manageable; there are a few things I’ve learned over the years that have helped me, and I hope these help you, too!

Don’t take on more than you can chew. There have been a few times where I’ve had to say no to amazing opportunities just for my own well-being. Remember, your well-being isn’t an excuse, it’s a priority. I’ll admit, it sucks! I wish we were able to do everything we wanted without running on a short fuse, but we’re only human. It’s okay to let go of things if it means being able to have a peace of mind.

Your “me time” is not selfish. I used to feel so shameful if I even admitted that I needed to take some time for myself, because I knew that that small amount of time would take me away from my responsibilities. Trust me, the only way to successfully manage your priorities is to manage yourself first. It’s not selfish, it’s a necessity!

Have a growth mindset. Unfortunately, responsibilities will never stop piling up. However, as you continue to be stretched into a million things, remember that your mindset is key. If you don’t think you’ll be able to balance “life,” you won’t; if you believe you’re capable of your responsibilities, you’ll manage!
