Outreach Team Lead

What does Outreach mean to you?

Striving to build a community where people feel acknowledged, accepted and valued. With Outreach, I hope we can expand our space and invite even more people in. I want others to have a space where they feel they "belong" and can express themselves creatively.

In your opinion, what role does community play in University? What makes a strong community?

Community creates the atmosphere of the University and there are a variety of different ones on-campus. It gives people a link to their identity and encourages others to share and explore that link. Strong communities help enrich the world by nurturing spaces for people to grow and learn together. Strong communities create friendships, movements and opportunities for their members to improve themselves and the world around them, even in the smallest ways.

What do you hope to accomplish with The Honor Code Outreach this semester?

I'm hoping to make even more fun memories and awesome projects with our team. I am especially grateful for my Outreach team, who have amazing ideas on-deck. I also hope to help make Honor Code an even warmer and more welcoming place.

What else would you like to say about yourself?

The world is a better place with love in it! If you're concerned or curious about mental health, I'd encourage you to check out Project OCEAN as well. Your mental health is so important! Take care.

What else would you like to say about yourself?

Outreach means community, friendship, and companionship. Being able to connect with others despite the ongoing pandemic makes me feel just a bit normal again.

In your opinion, what role does community play in University? What makes a strong community?

Community plays an important role at CSULB. Everyone is so diverse which makes this community feel like family. It doesn’t matter who you are, this community makes you feel LOVED.

What do you hope to accomplish with The Honor Code Outreach this semester?

I hope to find my passion, find new friends, build strong relationships, and have tons of fun! I am glad to have this opportunity.

What else would you like to say about yourself?

I’m so happy that I get to work with such amazing people. I get to learn new things that I can implement in my life. I am thankful I get to grow as a person in this community. I have also expanded my skill set and communication skills since being part of this awesome team.

What does Outreach mean to you?

When I hear the word outreach, I think of collaboration and opportunity. It’s about cultivating a safe and healthy environment where many people can learn, work, and grow together as individuals.

In your opinion, what role does community play in University? What makes a strong community?

Community plays an essential role in developing meaningful and lasting relationships. It thrives upon having strong communication, trust, teamwork, empathy, and many more. By building stronger and creating new forms of communities, students can learn more about themselves, inspire others, and be surrounded in an environment that constantly fosters growth and encourages clear transparency. Having a community helps us move forward and make more significant contributions to this world.

What do you hope to accomplish with The Honor Code Outreach this semester?

I want to create unique, and powerful content that inspires and resonates with many students beyond campus. I aim to be intentional with every project I engage in within The Honor Code. I’m beyond grateful to have met so many talented and inspiring people so far in this role.

What else would you like to say about yourself?

Shoutout to everyone on the team! You all continue to inspire me everyday. It's such an honor working with you all.

What does Outreach mean to you?

Outreach means connecting with the community, starting projects and activities that are fun, new, and bring strangers together.

In your opinion, what role does community play in University? What makes a strong community?

Community is essential to success in University. Classmates, friends, and teachers can make the learning environment challenging and rewarding, or daunting and stressful. The people one meets, makes the University experience great. A strong community is diverse, caring, and full of well-intentioned individuals.

What do you hope to accomplish with The Honor Code Outreach this semester?

I will try my best to host outreach events so that they are engaging and fun for all in attendance. I also hope to undertake unique, fun, and interesting projects that both surprise and entertain those who take part in them or see the end result.

What else would you like to say about yourself?

I'm grateful to be a part of the Honor Code! I've enjoyed my time so far and I hope to continue working alongside these fantastic people until I graduate!

Author's Note:

This project is inspired by the vintage double-exposure photographs made in the 80’s and 90’s. I chose this type of portrait as opposed to a standard, formal headshot to purposely emphasize the role of The Outreach Team. The Outreach team’s goal is to make fun, light-hearted memories that members of The Honor Code can look back on. These Double-Exposure portraits are just that, a cheerful, goofy memento of the past.

"Honors Student Visits Mexico" (Spring 2022)

This photo project represents the culture of Mexico as I traveled through Mexico with my family. I captured these images as I traveled through Puebla, Veracruz, and Mexico City. My first stop on this trip was Mexico City. I visited many monuments that symbolize Mexico City’s history. El Ángel de la Independencia or The Angel of Independence is located on a roundabout known as Paseo de la Reforma in downtown Mexico City. This monument was built to commemorate the anniversary of Mexico's victory in their War of Independence. I also had the opportunity to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is an important monument for the pilgrimage of the Catholic faith in Mexico. My second stop was Puebla where I had the opportunity to visit my parent’s hometown. The town is known for Citlaltépetl, an inactive volcano. My last stop was at Palacio Municipal in Veracruz for the Christmas lights show. Mexico is filled with a rich and diverse history, and this project gave me the opportunity to share it with you all.

This is my first place poem:

Dear America,

To the People,

& the World

By Alexa Saavedra

How is it so easy to be kind, when there is so much hate in the world?

Long ago there was a man who said, “We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive.”

He said, “He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.” He claimed, “There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.”

Who are our enemies?

Today there are many, to many they are oppressors. Oppressors who have affected us verbally or physically. Who overall have affected us emotionally. Who have drowned us to misery and have made it hard for us to rise up. Whom to this world we have now recognized them as our bullies.

How do we forgive?

Change, choosing to change is choosing forgiveness. I choose to be kind, to spread joy, and love. I choose to show a smile to my “enemies" and thank them for making me stronger.

I thank them for encouraging me to help others. I forgive them so I can live happily and freely with no hate or negativity in my heart. I live with a new purpose to aid and guide those who are going through similar hardships.

Who is He?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Fighter for love, supporter of forgiveness, and promoter of peace.

I have hope, such as he who said to America long ago, that love and forgiveness will help the future of our world prosper.

And till this day we commemorate and appreciate his goal to unite the people of the future on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Sub note:

I call this photograph “Hope.”

My father passed away on April 4, 2021, due to COVID-19. While he was in the hospital, I decided to send him pictures of the sky; this image was his favorite because it gave him hope for a new day. I wish that you marvel at this image and capture the same feeling as my father and me.

Please make sure you continue wearing a mask and schedule appointments to get your Covid-19 vaccines to keep yourself and others safe.

I’m pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering because of the 5 years I spent on my high school’s robotics team. I’m really interested in additive manufacturing like 3D printing and automation using robotics. I’m not quite sure how I see photography fitting into my future, but it will always be my favorite creative outlet.

A little less than 2 years ago, I found a Canon t5i in the street. I lied to myself and said it was a bad camera because I couldn’t seem to get any good photos. But I was out of luck, because my girlfriend at the time asked me to take her senior portraits, and I wasn’t going to embarrass myself. I spent months leading up to the big day trying to figure out all the settings on that thing, and the photos I got out of it were actually really good (for a beginner). Since then, I’ve fallen in love with photography. Now, I love to take portraits with beautiful, vibrant colors, and effects that make you wonder how the hell someone took that shot. Nothing beats the adrenaline you get when someone asks, “Wow, how’d you take that one?”
