A Cup of Coffee with the President

Updated: Oct 13, 2019

President Conoley stands before a group of Honors students and answers questions.

At “Java with Jane,” lemonade, coffee and cookies were served in the University Honors office as students conversed with President Jane Close Conoley.

One major theme was transportation, as commuting to Long Beach State can be quite challenging for many students.

Although Conoley mentioned the 50,000 square feet of underutilized classrooms, she said there was little space to create more parking structures. Conoley recommended forms of sustainable transportation, such as carpooling and using the bus, to address these issues.

Another concern brought up was the inability of some students to access healthy foods.  Conoley brought up the CalFresh Beach Pantry, which has partnered with Whole Foods to give students access to organic fruits and vegetables. There’s also Beach Bites, an app that notifies students if there’s any leftovers or free food on campus.

Through the offered programs, Conoley hopes to diminish hunger on campus since it remains an obstacle to student success.

Looking to the future, Conoley mentioned shark merchandise will be available for purchase in the next year. The only question is whether the shark will be frightening or friendly!

She also spoke about the idea to create a UHP college on campus, since it has grown from 800 to over 1,000 students. By expanding faculty, UHP could potentially reach the goal of developing into an official college.

Conoley also offered advice to Honors students during this event: “Don’t be afraid to...say yes to things.”

She recommended graduating seniors seek out the Career Development Center in Brotman Hall and the Graduate Student Resource Center on the University Library fifth floor. These centers can help with resume editing, personal statement drafting, and interviews.

In the end, Conoley promised that, regardless of the subject, all of her daily meetings are related to student success.

“I really like our students ...they're not entitled,” Conoley said.“I meet students who are here to get stuff done and they’re focused.”

Conoley said she enjoys serving as president of CSULB’s unique, diverse campus and loves interacting with all students.

“It’s great to be the president,” she said.
