With the majority of classes back on campus, a common conundrum that confronts college students is long breaks in between classes. Zoom classes in the comfort of our own homes provided the luxury of not having to worry about long stretches of time in between courses. In this article, I will provide several ways Honors students at CSULB can stay productive and engaged during breaks in between classes on campus.
1) Homework in the Sunshine
Personally, this is my favorite way to spend time in between classes. On campus, there are numerous areas outside with tables provided for students to do their homework. Many tables include umbrellas and conveniently offer shade on sunny days. Studying outside offers the benefits of fresh air and Vitamin D while also getting work done.
2) Have a “Picnic”
If you are tired of sitting at tables/desks all day, a great way to spend a break between classes is on the grass. Keeping a small towel in your backpack is an easy, lightweight way to avoid potential grass stains. There are many trees on campus making it easy to find shade.
3) The University Student Union
If being outdoors is not your thing, the University Student Union is another option for Honors students seeking a place to tackle heavy workloads in between classes. Spending time at the USU is a superb way to feel as if you are making use of the school tuition you have paid for facilities on campus. The Union offers plenty of “lounges” for students to work in as well as a bowling alley and billiards room amongst other features.
4) The Rec Center
Another way to feel as if you are reaping the full value of university tuition is by spending breaks at the university’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Replete with a rock wall and a new smoothie café, the Rec Center offers a way for Honors students to find time for fitness in between a heavy course load.
5) The Library
Another option for those who prefer studying inside rather than outside is the library. It is a fantastic place to complete schoolwork while having a plethora of resources available for study at your fingertips.
6) Honors Area on Fifth Floor of Library
Specifically for Honors students only, the Honors Area on the Fifth Floor of the Library is another way to spend a break on campus. The Honors Area is the perfect way to maximize the benefits that accompany being a part of the University Honors Program. It is a wonderful way to take advantage of Honors-only opportunities available at CSULB.
After reading this list, I hope Honors students can find new and inspiring ways to spend breaks in between their classes on campus. Getting work done at school allows us students to separate our school lives from the rest of our lives by creating boundaries between schoolwork and time away from campus. In my own experience, completing most of my work while at school has allowed for greater time for rest and recreation between commutes and classwork, and is a huge help in time management. I hope this article helps other Honors students find that sweet spot of balancing schoolwork with the other aspects of their lives.
