How to Care for your Succulents

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

Are you someone who always buys succulents, but a month later, they’re all dead? Here is a care kit for your succulents:

Plenty of Sunlight:

Although some succulent labels say that they require low amounts of light, they need at least some sunlight— plants need this sunlight to produce energy for their metabolic processes! They couldn’t produce oxygen or function properly with it; too little light results in the plant dying. So be sure to give your plant as much light as it needs.

What if you live somewhere with low light?

Put the succulent on a windowsill that frequents sunlight or place the succulent outside in a spot that is sunny

Even if it’s only a couple of hours, your plant will soak up this light energy and will be a much healthier plant. If using these methods, try to practice this technique regularly.

Ask a friend!

Some housing conditions do not accommodate for the optimum succulent lifestyle— I used to send them to my friends’ apartment for a couple of days a week. My apartment was on the third floor, with little to no sunlight anywhere near any windows or on my small patio. Sending them to a friends house where a lot of light shined allowed for my plants to live while I lived in those conditions.

Water

A common myth of succulents is that you don’t have to water them; this is true for some, but many succulents require more love than that. A general rule of thumb is that when your succulent soil is dry, then it is time to water them. It is important to water your succulent because water highly contributes to the overall structure of your succulent; it is what helps a plant grow vertically and healthily. Be sure to have a well draining pot and soil, or the succulent will have too much water and will drown the succulent. Maintaining water equilibrium for your succulent will allow for them to live a long and healthy life.

Know Your Plant

Steps one and two are a great start in caring for your succulent, but every plant is different. Read online about your specific species of succulent and what amount of water, sunlight, and soil they need to thrive.
