Honors Coffee Talk

Updated: May 22, 2023

After spring break, we all likely wake up tired at 6 or 7 a.m. to prepare for the school day. We push ourselves to get out of bed, brush our teeth, dress, and make our way to school. With finals approaching and final projects looming, Honors students can always rely on their most dependable companion, a reliable cup of coffee. Coffee can assist every student in staying awake and alert, allowing them to be ready to learn at all times.

If any Honors student who has ever had the amazing taste of coffee can agree, it can keep you awake and alert so that you can get work done. Below are the five most popular coffee drinks of all time:

1. Americano

Caffè Americano is a kind of coffee drink made by diluting espresso with hot water, giving it a comparable strength but a distinct flavor to ordinary brewed coffee. Its intensity varies according to the number of espresso shots used and the amount of water added.

2. Breve

A breve is an espresso-based beverage prepared with steamed half-and-half rather than milk. The drink is then topped with a lovely coating of frothed milk foam.

3. Cafe au lait

Coffee with heated milk is known as café au lait. White coffee, on the other hand, is coffee with cold milk

or other whiteners added.

4. Cafe mocha

Cafe mocha is a mixture of espresso, milk and chocolate.

5. Cappuccino

A cappuccino is an espresso-based coffee drink that originated in Austria and was subsequently developed in Italy. It is made with steamed milk froth. Variations include using cream instead of milk, nondairy milk replacements, and seasoning with cinnamon or chocolate powder.

Now that Honors students have an idea of what kind of coffee to drink, below are the five most popular places around campus to grab a cup of coffee or simply places to study!

1. Recreational Coffee

Just a 15-minute ride from campus, Recreational coffee is Long Beach’s number one most popular coffee spot! With more than 400 reviews, the shop has more than 4.5 stars! This coffee shop sells their own merchandise, while being a bit on the pricey side, they sell kid’s drinks for under $3, and you can stay there for as long as you’d like to study, do projects, or simply relax! While their drinks are exceptional as their reviews state, their food is just as scrumptious as well! Head on down to recreational coffee and make sure you buy an americano and one of their famous doughnuts!

2. Viento y Agua

Around 5 minutes from campus, Viento y Agua’s decor is very cozy and homey. Their shop is covered in beautiful art, with sculptures inside as well! The majority of their coffee drinks remain under $5, with many interesting food choices for students to choose from! Viento y Agua also has over 400 reviews, also over 4.5 stars, earning it a well-earned popular spot to chill, study, or grab that cup of coffee before class!

3. Portfolio Coffeehouse

Portfolio Coffeehouse, less than a 10-minute ride from campus, has over 800 positive reviews rating over 4.5 stars! They are located among the tree-lined neighborhoods of 4th Street Retro Row, providing culture, camaraderie, and caffeine fixes to java seekers among a diverse assortment of people, antique furniture, an outdoor terrace, and excellent art. This local coffeehouse has two huge rooms and a wide outdoor terrace, as well as a breakfast and lunch menu, pastries, and all the specialty coffee you'd expect from a community coffeehouse. Portfolio Coffeehouse established the distinction of being on the leading edge of creative expression as the first coffeehouse in Long Beach to host poetry readings in 1990. Portfolio continues to provide a place for rising West Coast visual artists, with exhibits lasting six to eight weeks. Musical performers perform live on selected Friday and Saturday nights, and Portfolio has been a venue for several film and television projects, as well as being featured on live radio.

4. Steelhead Coffee

Steelhead coffee, less than a 15 ride from campus, rates number four on Long Beach’s most popular coffee shops, having over 450 reviews with over 4 stars! Long Beach's favorite serves freshly made artisan coffee, espresso, and tea to start the day and wind down in the evening. Tap-poured Kombucha, baked goods, and bagged coffee to enjoy at home are all available. On a nice sunny day, Honors students can enjoy sitting outside to study, chat with friends, or simply enjoy a peaceful moment of people watching.

5. Rose Parks Roasters

Rose Parks Roasters, less than a 10-minute drive from campus, has the feel of a local shop, having over 300 reviews with more than 4.5-star rating. On a more meta-level, the iconic "Welcome to the Process'' mural on the wall embodies their key approach as a business and as people: bringing everyone into the process of coffee roasting, but also appreciating the process and prioritizing gradual progress above attempting to get it perfect every time. This coffee shop also has outdoor seating available and is generally laid-back for every student to enjoy.

Now that Honors students have an idea of the top five favorite drinks in the world, as well as the top five popular coffee shops in Long Beach, head on down to any of these establishments to either stay or grab and go! Come take a break, study, or bring friends to these neighborhood coffee shops to change up your scenery as we get closer to finals and, with them, closer to summer!
