An Honors Student Winter Wonderland

Updated: May 22, 2023

The holiday season is already upon us Honors students! With fall in full swing and winter rapidly approaching, there are a huge variety of events for Honors students this year!

If you’re looking for a classic winter activity, look no further than East West Ice Palace! Offering public skate on the weekends for just $14 (and $3 skate rentals for anyone who doesn’t have a pair of their own) this is the perfect winter activity to really get in the festive mood. And if you wait until later in the December months - right after finals have finished wrapping up - public skating will be open every day for you to be able to relax, unwind, and get rid of some of that remaining test season stress. Check out their website for more information on requirements and event details!

For the movie lovers out there you might want to check out the Rooftop Cinema Club DTLA, where they are having special holiday screenings through December 19th. With movie offerings like Home Alone, Love Actually, Black Christmas and many others you can enjoy some of your favorite festive movies with the twinkling lights of downtown LA around you. Student discount seats are available for $16.65-22.50 each (depending on the package you want included). Special Note: all the events are 18+ for this cinema club.

Want to experience something more nature-oriented for the winter season? Venture further out of Long Beach to visit the Enchanted Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens! Located within their botanical gardens, the forest is a light-based art installation with villages of stained glass houses, kaleidoscope light structures, and oak groves covered in lights. Tickets for students start at $11. Check out their website for more information on tickets and exhibitions.

For those of us who love shopping - or still need to find gifts for the holidays - there’s the Los Angeles Holiday Market! With over 150 designers and artists presenting their merchandise it’s the perfect place to go to find the perfect gift for someone you love - or just pick up a treat for yourself. Single day tickets are $12 (including free drinks, DIY gift wrapping sessions, and lawn games) or for those who are 21+ you can splurge for a VIP pass at $30 each which includes the full experience and some free gifts. Check out the Unique Markets Los Angeles page for more information on the vendors and ticket prices.

And if you can’t make it to any of these events, there’s always that classic holiday activity: curling up with your favorite holiday drink and spending time with your friends and family. Happy Holidays, UHP students!
